Telling our Stories: Spotlight on Matt Geiger, Olami Denver Experience Participant
For Matt, a young professional and recent transplant to Denver, The Jewish Experience has been more than just a community center—it’s been a lifeline. In an industry as demanding as news reporting, Matt treasures the sanctuary that TJE provides.
“I do weekly study with Rabbi Wolfe,” Matt shares. “We meet at the Yeshiva, read together—it’s really grounding. It’s been amazing to have that pillar of learning in my life.” The learning isn’t where TJE’s impact stops for Matt. The community has been a beacon in his otherwise packed and challenging schedule. “There have been times work runs right up to Shabbat. I’ve finished my day at TJE, in the back office while Kabbalat Shabbat is going on. It’s a tool, a space—but really, it’s about being part of a bigger community.”
The more you do Jewish things – the less external negativity impacts you.”
Matt first encountered TJE during a summer internship. Though he hadn’t yet committed to Denver, the mountains, and TJE’s warm embrace made the city irresistible. Now a full-time resident, Matt reflects on the profound connection between his Jewish identity and his profession as a reporter. “Jewish values like integrity and honesty shape how I approach my work. In journalism, it’s essential to pursue truth and remain balanced. It aligns with the lessons in the Torah about commerce and human interactions.”
Reflecting on challenges, Matt speaks about processing global and personal tragedies, including the events of October 7th, the same day he moved to Denver. “Initially, there was grief, but I’ve come to see the importance of living day-to-day and not letting hardships define you. The more you do Jewish things—attend Shabbat, study Torah—the less external negativity impacts you.”
For Matt, the joy of Judaism lies in connection. “When people ask what Judaism means to me, I say, ‘It’s hanging out with my friends.’ It’s about community, celebration, and meaning.”
As Matt continues to settle into life in Denver, TJE remains his home away from home, reminding him—and others—of the power of community and shared purpose.
